Yes, they do get an email that you've answered the question. You can see the email template for the email that was sent to them after you answer by going under "Customization > System Emails"....and select the email type in the dropdown named "New Answer Posted for User's Question". There you can see the template that is used to notify them, and you can also edit/adjust that as you'd like.
This helps ensure that every customer gets a notification when an answer is posted to their question, and that you have control over that email.
