Well, the first thing you should be concerned about is does it hurt the impression of your business for your visitors. Unanswered questions will reflect on your brand, so that is why Answerbase's default setting for new questions asked on ecommerce stores is to keep it private until it has been answered....but there are use cases where it may make sense to have unanswered questions public. For example, if you're supporting a Q&A community....questions would be public so your community can see them and answer them.
As far as their impact on SEO, it really has none.....you can see Google responding to this question on their video here:
So, Google doesn't care from an SEO standpoint if your questions are answered or not....and you should (as always) be more concerned about what your visitors/customers will think about unanswered questions. If it's a question they expect to see an answer from your brand, then make sure they're answered....but if you're heavily into "Community Q&A" it can be very normal for some questions to go unanswered for a period of time.
