You can see an example of how Google is showing shopping results in an "at a glance" panel...you can see an example here:

You'll see that this is different than the "Popular Products" merchant listings which have taken over shopping related searches....see how those show here when the pull up:

But...it looks like a similar product selection and similar rankings that show in those rich snippet results as "merchant listings"....so from the looks of it, it may be another rich format of shopping results that Google is experimenting with. You can see that the same product that is the #1 spot in both merchant listings and organic listing which are shown above....are also coming up and highlighted in the "at a glance" as shown here:

So, looks like Google is just giving the searcher a bit of a variety of shopping search results to figure out which one services the search best for the searcher. As with anything, the prioritization of the sites/ranking is heavily impacted by "people first helpful content"....you can see that "trainoasis" site has been optimized by Answerbase with "people first helpful content" and is ranking up there (and outranking sometimes) Amazon....and TrainOasis has a "domain authority" of ZERO. So, Google is doing what they said they would do....they're prioritizing sites that are publishing "people first helpful content" and that impacts the sites overall rankings for the short-tail keyphrases that they're interested in ranking within.
