We have had clients manage that in the past via CSS and JavaScript customizations which you can manage in your "Customization" area. It should be possible to manage it through those tools. We don't have a specific "hide profile images" setting available...so this would need to be managed through that customization. Click on the image below to view a screenshot of where this can be achieved.
